Hello All!! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving?
Okay since I last updated we have done quite a bit.
- Had our first (of two) meetings with our adoption consultant
First she provided us with a 4.5 hour podcast to listen to that told us all about the different types of adoption, general information, drafting a profile, etc. Then in our meeting we went over all the paperwork/questionnaires we had provided her (see previous update). So talking about if there was anything in our background that would be a problem, a ton of time on the type of child we were open to, our comfort level with birth mother interaction, just tons of feeling us out. Then we talked about what we were thinking for our profile.
This was weird to me. Usually you start your home study and during your wait time on that you draft your profile. Our consultant does it the opposite. It adds a month to your total prep time, but she says that if we start with the homestudy paperwork and then do the profile, the profile doesn't turn out as good. She says the profile is what matters most so you want to do it when you are excited and fresh, before the homestudy paperwork beats you down. I am antsy for the extra wait time, but her logic makes sense. Anyhow, it was BRUTAL drafting the profile, and took us more hours than I ever would have imagined, but we submitted our first draft to our consultant yesterday for her review. She says to expect the work for the second draft to be nearly as bad as for the first, but after that it gets easier - she estimates it will be the end of January before we get it finalized.
- Scheduled our second meeting with our adoption consultant
Our next meeting is on 12/11 where we will go over her comments on our profile and start our homestudy process. (We also have another 1 hour long recording to get through this weekend).
- Getting excited for a baby!
We attended a three hour adoptive parent newborn care class, which was great! I sort of dragged my husband, but he ended up loving it and is now fully on board for more classes (yay!). I also signed us up for a 2 hour cloth diaper class (mostly for my sister who is due in April and I am helping her with her registry) - my DH came along and really enjoyed the first hour, but then it just kept going (3.5 hours total, when I had promised 2 at most) - so by the end we were both exhausted and a little less than thrilled about the whole experience. Woulda been a great 1.5 hour class though. Also, the woman teaching the class told us about a local breast milk bank that may be able to work with us, so I think she will be a great resource (I will just make sure to have an exit strategy next time!).
Sorry for the long gap in posting, I have just been completely swamped!! Can't wait for next week for our next appointment and starting the homestudy process!!
